My parents both had big birthdays this year – my Dad turned 75 last month, and my mom turns 70 later this month. My sister, sister-in-law and I have been talking about doing a girls’ weekend to celebrate my mom’s birthday for MONTHS. Once we hit May we really started the planning stage, and were luckily able to find a weekend where we were all free. Then we had to find a place to go, which wound up being much harder than anticipated. This time of year a lot of places are either booked or have a 2-night minimum. My sister-in-law suggested the Hershey Hotel, and luckily they had availability. So we booked a room and told my mom the destination would be a surprise.
Saturday morning we met at my parents’ house at 8am and quickly hit the road. We gave my mom a bag of Hershey kisses to let her know where we were going, and she was quite surprised! During the 2-hour car ride the four of us had a blast just drinking coffee, catching up on life, and talking about all the fun things we would be doing that weekend.
We got to the hotel at 10:30am, and we immediately headed to the outdoor pool. Relaxation and sun were definitely high on our priority list. The pool at the hotel is awesome, and is separated into an adult-only area complete with an infinity pool and hot tub as well as a kids area. We found lounge chairs together and set up shop. Of course the running joke was that I couldn’t sit still for more than 10 minutes, so I decided I had to check out the water slides in the kids’ area. This was probably one of my favorite parts of the weekend. And with 2 slides we got to race each other as well.
One of the coolest part about the pool area is you can order lunch and have it brought to you. So fancy! We each ordered a salad, and it was just so much fun enjoying our lunch while soaking up the sun. Such a nice treat!
We of course needed to tell the server that we were here celebrating my mom’s birthday, and she later came out and brought this cute cupcake. We each had a bite, and I’m not going to pretend we didn’t eat the chocolate “happy birthday” as well. #noshame
After getting our fill of the sun, we decided to head inside to explore a bit. The hotel is huge, and has so many fun things to see. We popped into some of the little shops, grabbed iced coffees from the cute bakery, and relaxed a bit in the “Italy Room.” This room was absolutely beautiful, and the water fountain in the middle made the whole scene so peaceful. My sister even took a little nap on one of the couches in there while the rest of us shopped for souvenirs.
While we were exploring the hotel we needed to let the chocolate bar know it was my mom’s birthday weekend 🙂
Once we got checked into our room we decided we were all a little hungry. With about 2 hours until our dinner reservation, we decided to find someplace to order appetizers and just relax a bit. We found this cute little pub and set up shop with our drinks, appetizers, and cards. Looking back this was definitely a highlight of the trip (especially for my mom, who LOVES playing cards)!
After we finished up at the pub it was time to head back to the room to get all prettied up for dinner. I forgot how fun it is to get ready with other girls. My sister-in-law even curled my hair! And my sister let me try this special mascara she has that made my eyelashes so long!
I do have to mention that somewhere during the getting-ready stage I made the mistake of texting Nathan to see how things were going on the home front. Bad decision I suppose…
The restaurant we went to was really nice, and we had a blast just enjoying the cute atmosphere. The food was really yummy, and we even stepped outside to attempt a picture with the beautiful sunset.
And what birthday dinner is complete without a cupcake? Two in one weekend!
The evening ended with us just chilling in the room and laughing about everything. Girls’ nights are the best! Sunday morning my sister and I decided to check out the fitness center, which was quite impressive! We got in a really great workout, which was fun because we used to workout together all the time before having kids. Check out these views.
After our workout we grabbed coffees from the coffee shop and decided to wander around the gardens. I’m disappointed that I forgot my camera, because the garden was definitely impressive. They even have a Butterfly House which was FILLED with plants and butterflies. So amazing! After our walk we decided to head back to the room to shower and get dressed. While the girls were finishing up my mom and I played a little Rummy on our balcony. This was such a cute addition to our room! It overlooked the indoor pool and hot tub and was like a little extension of our room.
And just like that, our trip came to an end. We stopped for lunch on the way home, and I arrived back at the house around 3:45pm to excited screams from the kids and a very tired husband! We had such a fun weekend, and my mom was in heaven the whole time telling everyone who would listen how her girls surprised her with a birthday weekend getaway. And she must have had fun, because she is already planning our trip next year!
Have you ever had a girls getaway? What fun things do you enjoy doing when you’re away on vacation?
