Lots of life updates

Lots of life updates

Happy Friday everyone!  Who is ready for the weekend?  We have a great weather forecast for today, so we are taking the kids to the Philadelphia Zoo.  So excited!  We are planning to head there early and bring lots of water – it’s going to be a hot one!  So much going on over here these days, so I figured I would update you on life with tons of pictures.

Last Friday I decided to try my hand at a 6am workout.  Maybe it’s because I only go to the gym in the evenings, but man was this tough!  The air in there was so humid, and it seemed like everything I did took extra effort.  The “warmup” included 8 rounds of 8 burpees and a 40-yard sprint (every minute on the minute). Doesn’t sound that bad until you do the math and realize you’re doing 64 burpees (along with sprints) in just 8 minutes.  I was toasted after the warmup alone!

July in our house means birthday celebrations.  It also means peas!  We call these “open peas,” not to be confused with sugar snap peas where you eat the entire thing.  All 4 of us can eat these like candy.  We all just sit around the counter and go to town until we are left with a massive mound of shells (at least that makes for some great compost)!  And no matter how many extra seeds Nathan plants, we never have excess to give away.  I’m afraid we’re all becoming vegetable snobs…

Last Friday was pouring rain all day, so I decided to treat the kids to a movie and popcorn after lunch.  We watched Finding Dory, and the kids helped me make the popcorn.  I always forget about popcorn, but it’s such a fun snack to make (and eat)!  My helpers are never far away…

Friday afternoon Nathan and I hit a wall, so I made us some “his and hers” iced coffees.  Nathan is making Reagan a bed, and his brain was fried with all the math and measuring.  He promised me he’s taking pictures of the progress, so I’m hoping to dedicate an entire post to the bed.  He’s really getting good at wood-working!  I guess I better hit Pinterest again to refill his list…

Saturday morning Nathan spent working in the garden, so I decided to get a bunch of food prep done.  I told him I needed greens for our salads, and he came in with this MASSIVE heap of all sorts of goodness (summer lettuce, kale, collards, and bok choy).  Note to self: buy salad spinner 🙂

I know I posted about our 4th of July kayaking trip, but I never shared pictures from our second trip.  My sister and brother-in-law brought their older son Braxton (22 months old), and we had the best time.  We’re hoping to hit the river again tomorrow as long as the rain stays away.

Saturday night date night!  We were able to enjoy a meal outside in some surprisingly dry air (and without having to remind 2 kids about table manners 50+ times).  We also spent tons of time walking around and admiring the old houses and just chatting about life.  Whenever we have a date night I always wonder why we don’t do them more often.  We are hoping to get away for a weekend in October to celebrate our anniversary.  Just working on childcare for that one.

Pool fun!  We spent Saturday afternoon at the pool, and (for better or worse) neither kid has any fear around the water.  They were both jumping off the diving board like lunatics, and we had to basically DRAG them out of the water when it was time to go home.  And apparently our kids think they need to put their hands over their heads whenever they jump in?

Ever since the kids were little, I always made their birthday cakes.  I remember Graham’s epic train cake (for his 2nd birthday), which I slaved over for HOURS just 4 days before Reagan was born.  Since then I have simplified things a bit, buying plastic figurines for the top that corresponds with the theme they chose. Since we combine birthday parties, that means making 2 separate cakes each year.  But I couldn’t be more thrilled with how they turned out, and the most important thing was that the kids thought they were awesome!  Martha Stewart I am not, but this I can do!

Beachy waves!  I stand firm on the fact that my 4-year old daughter it way more fashionable than me.  And she has this confidence where she can pull off her most beautiful party dress paired with teal Nike sneakers 🙂  I will admit I am also jealous of her hair.  It is this amazing blond color, and a simple braid at night after taking a bath produces these amazing beachy waves the next morning.  Maybe when she’s older she can help her poor Mama improve her style…

And with that, I will leave you with the most adorable picture of Reagan cuddling with one of her birthday presents – a unicorn nightlight.  Whatever it takes girlie!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  We’re over halfway through July!

What do you guys have planned this weekend?  Is summer going by way too fast for anyone else?
